Transforming Network Model Processes for ADMS Applications

Situation

A U.S. utility was preparing for the next phase of its grid modernization journey and needed to strengthen its distribution network model to support new Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) capabilities. As formal testing activities approached, the utility needed confidence that its network model was accurate, scalable, and ready to support both advanced applications and ongoing operational demands.

The goal

Prepare a high-quality, operationally aligned network model that would support ADMS deployment, reduce implementation risk, and ensure readiness for testing and cutover activities.

Complication

The utility faced fragmented processes, evolving business requirements, and the challenge of coordinating work across multiple stakeholders, including IT, Data Governance, model managers, and control room teams. Success depended on aligning operational needs with technical requirements, maintaining day-to-day network model activities, resolving issues quickly, and ensuring readiness for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), User Acceptance Testing (UAT), and final cutover. Without strong governance and coordination, the project risked delays, model inaccuracies, and disruptions to critical modernization timelines.

resolution

Mosaic provided senior advisory leadership for the network model workstream, helping the utility establish stronger governance, streamline business processes, and align operational and technical requirements. Working closely with stakeholders across the organization, Mosaic validated and optimized network model design, representation, maintenance, and testing processes while supporting day-to-day operational activities.

The team coordinated planning and execution for testing and cutover activities, facilitated troubleshooting and defect management, translated business objectives into actionable requirements and use cases, and maintained project transparency through clear reporting and communication. By improving stakeholder alignment, strengthening network model quality, and ensuring readiness for every testing phase, Mosaic helped reduce implementation risk and position the utility for a successful ADMS deployment and future grid modernization initiatives.
