A large combined utility was implementing an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) to consolidate four separate distribution operations systems into a single platform. The initiative was intended to improve operational efficiency, strengthen cybersecurity, and establish a foundation for future distributed energy resource (DER) integration. With a large service territory, extensive customer base, and a significant number of SCADA-connected assets, the utility also sought to improve consistency across its control rooms and gain greater visibility into its distribution network.
Successfully implement a unified ADMS platform while ensuring operators, processes, and technology were aligned for long-term operational success.
The transition required more than a technology replacement. The utility needed to configure and test a complex ADMS environment, prepare employees across multiple roles to use new tools and workflows, and establish consistent operating practices across its control rooms. Success depended on building trust among end users, ensuring operational requirements were reflected in system design, and minimizing disruption during the transition to a new operating model.
The utility selected Mosaic for its extensive control room operations expertise and deep experience supporting Schneider Electric ADMS implementations. Drawing on lessons learned from utility operations and ADMS projects across North America, Mosaic provided advisory, technical, training, and change management support throughout the implementation.
Key elements of the engagement included:
Mosaic also led a comprehensive change management effort focused on operator engagement and adoption. Through focus group-style control room visits, Mosaic's industry experts provided hands-on demonstrations, answered questions, and helped stakeholders understand how the new ADMS would support their work. These sessions gave operators an opportunity to provide feedback and actively participate in shaping the future operating environment.
Working closely with the project team, Mosaic incorporated operator feedback into system design decisions and configuration updates. The resulting improvements increased end-user confidence, strengthened buy-in, and supported more effective training and adoption of the new platform.
By aligning system design with operational realities and actively engaging end users throughout the implementation, the utility established a stronger foundation for ADMS adoption, greater consistency across control room operations, and continued modernization of its distribution network.
