SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

Powering People: Leadership Growth in Energy Operations

Tuesday, May 19 | 10:15am–11:45am

Frontline leaders sit at the intersection of safety, performance, and people—and their influence is only growing as the energy landscape evolves. This session takes a closer look at how utilities are preparing supervisors, foremen, and training coordinators from both traditional and nontraditional backgrounds to lead effectively in fast‑changing environments.

Through peer discussion and real-world examples, attendees will explore ways to build leadership capabilities that extend beyond technical expertise, including communication, decision-making, and team engagement. The conversation will also address how organizations can better support frontline leaders as they navigate workforce change, operational complexity, and new technologies.

Energizing the Workforce: The Next Generation of Simulation and Immersive Training

Tuesday, May 19 | 1:00pm–2:15pm

What does effective training look like when the job is complex, high-risk, and constantly evolving? Increasingly, utilities are turning to immersive technologies to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world performance.

This session dives into how tools like VR/AR, AI, and digital twins are being used to create hands-on, scenario-based learning experiences that improve technical proficiency and safety outcomes. Attendees will hear practical lessons learned, explore real applications, and discuss key considerations for integrating immersive training into existing programs.

L&D as a Strategic Business Partner

Wednesday, May 20 | 10:30am–11:45am

Training is most effective when it’s tightly aligned with operational priorities—but achieving that alignment takes more than good intentions. In this session, utilities will examine how Learning & Development and Operations can work together more strategically to support workforce performance.

The discussion will focus on clearly defining roles and responsibilities, balancing competency development with operational accountability, and strengthening collaboration between teams. Participants will also share approaches for ensuring training initiatives are directly tied to business outcomes in the field and control room.

Human Performance & Error Reduction in Field Operations

Wednesday, May 20 | 12:45pm–1:30pm

In field operations, the smallest misstep can carry serious consequences. Recognizing this reality, many utilities are placing greater emphasis on human performance principles to reduce errors and strengthen decision-making.

This session explores how behavior-based safety and scenario-driven training are being used to reinforce safe behaviors, build situational awareness, and help teams perform under pressure. Attendees will discuss practical techniques for preparing field personnel to recognize critical moments and respond effectively before issues escalate.
